‘Selfie’ pilot #review

I gave that new show ‘Selfie’ a try and while it’s surely painfully cute and it’s painfully formulaic as well. It’s pretty obvious it was written by the people whose biggest social media victory so far was setting up their own MySpace page as all the selfie/hashtag jokes here are uninspired and trite. All that social media bashing on the show serves solely as a lazy excuse for another story about oh-so-different-yet-mutually-attracted Mister Right and Miss Clumsy. There is a chance the whole thing would be way better if Isla Fisher was playing the lead instead of her knockoff. But the show’s also way too cute to not (potentially) cause an #addiction. At least that Bad Romance-makeover scene was a killer.

5/10

Friendly Voice

It’s always nice to see you friends doing a good job. Especially when it’s on the biggest singing competition on your country’s main TV station. So it’s pretty safe to say I was quite happy for my long-time friend Ksana Sergienko doing more than fine during her audition on last night’s The Voice Russia.

Back in 2010, during my first US trip, I saw Ksana destroying the stage as the frontwoman of the hard rock band Oxzana at the New Music Seminar convention. I was absolutely captivated by her voice, looks and nuclear charisma so it’s no brainer I ended writing about her on more than one occasion and we eventually became good friends.

Here are 2 of my articles about Ksana:

This one was in Billboard Russia in February 2011, when I was running the ‘Fresh Blood’ section in the magazine.

And this is the feature I did for a Status Chicago magazine (2012) featuring a stunning photo by our mutual friend, photographer Yura Liamin – who’s also responsible for my website’s main photo:

And here’s my favorite Oxzana song – a dark ballad about a prostitute called ‘Worthless’ which I was lucky enough to hear in its original form during one of the band’s early rehearsals. I still think it will become a hit one day.

But for now – go win that show, babe!

Your next favorite boyband is here

The X Factor UK is in full swing – the boot camp is over and I can surely say that we’ve already seen and heard this season’s pop-Godzilla. Simon Cowell’s new weapon of massive destruction is a 8-piece boyband which is currently titled New Boy Band (I say keep the name – it’s genius!). Surely it was only a matter of time before UK would start adopting K-pop’s approach to boy/girlbands (which is rather simple – the bigger the better). And it’s absolutely no surprise it’s mister Cowell who’s put two and two (or more like four and four) together and turned 8 cute and young solo singers into a shiny megaband, that easily overshadowed their competitors – a mediocre One Direction knockoff ‘Overload’.

I’m yet to see if New Boy Band (I mean come on, don’t you just love that name?!) will become my favorites during the live shows, but it’s pretty safe to say that even in the current unstable state of the music industry their future smells of cash money.

In other news: Cheryl still looks cute when she cries, but Mel B (when present on set) is stealing some of her spotlight this season. But only one of them has a performance option on the show, so hey, they’re even.

Il Centimetro

It’s no surprise an accessory can make or break the whole look, so I’m always on the lookout for some clever little additions to my wardrobe. And Italian ‘Il Centimetro’ bracelets I saw at the Milan’s Rude Concept store were love at first sight for me and my friends. We all ended up buying ourselves those bracelets to have something unique and colorful from out recent trip to France and Italy (I got the white&gold one for 39 euros).

They sell those hotties all around Europe and here’s a UK store: http://uk.ilcentimetro.it/

10 songs for the perfect Saturdays

The Saturdays are quite an interesting band. They’ve been around for 6 years – eternity in a female pop world – yet they hardly ever crossed any boundaries: no scandals, no dramas, no big experiments – just a lot of marriages, polite smiles and lazy dancing. But even though they played it rather safe for most of their career, they still managed to release an impressive collection of enjoyable bangers. With their first (and let’s hope not last) greatest hits compilation out, it’s time to re-visit their poptastic catalogue and pick the 10 best tunes. Here’s my ultimate The Saturdays collection.

Up

The Saturdays first single (‘If This Is Love’) was easy to miss, but they have properly arrived with this hell of a pop banger that served as their second single. Beware of the album version though: radio edit is what you want. That chorus!

Interview with ‘Salem’s Ashley Madekwe

Posted on by Mikey Moscow in Articles, Blog, Cinema, Interviews, Style, TV | Leave a comment

I was pleasantly surprised by the first season of WGN’s ‘Salem’. What looked like an ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ cash-in turned out to be a way better show with impressive twists, great atmosphere and decent character development. So I was very happy to arrange an online chat with one of the show’s stars – British actress Ashley Madekwe (‘Revenge’), who’s also quite a fashionista – when on holidays from her witchy duties she runs a personal style blog Ring My Bell with the help of her husband (and ‘Salem’ co-star) Iddo Goldberg.

The Russian version of the interview was published on Cosmopolitan Russia website and the original version is below.

You have quite a background! Can you lead us through the main points of your life?

I was born and raised in South London. I love London and really think of myself as a ‘Londoner’. After attending RADA (drama school) in London and working as an actress for a few years I decided to move to America with my husband and cat! I’ve been living in Los Angeles full time for 3 years and still miss home!

You worked both in English and US movie industry. Is there any difference?

The only difference for me is the amount of material available. There is a greater volume of material in the US and that’s why British actors gravitate here. I find myself having more scripts to read in the US than I ever did at home.

What’s your personal experience with the supernatural? Are you a believer?

I believe there are things in this world that can’t rationalized or explained. It would be very boring not to believe in a little magic!

If you were an actual witch, how would you use your power?

It depends on what my ‘powers’ were! In Salem the witches have no real supernatural power. All their magic comes from ritual and sacrifice… I certainly would NOT be using Tituba’s powers of necromancy! (re-animating the dead).

Did you do any research while preparing for ‘Salem’?

I read as much as I could about Tituba and the period that the show is set in and then disregarded it all! “Salem” is a fictionalized story and we’re not trying to stay true to the historical events.

Seeing you’re quite a fashion expert, did you give any advices to the ‘Salem’s costume designer?

I wouldn’t dare give Joseph fashion advice! He’s so fabulous and chic that he doesn’t need it. Our discussions about costume are all to do with how the costume makes the character feel and the message that it gives to the audience. For example, Tituba is Mary’s servant to the outside world but privately and within their coven she is not. We tried to highlight that a little with Tituba’s clothes. She doesn’t quite dress in the rags you would typically expect from a servant of the time.

I know you probably can’t reveal much, but can you give us a hint about ‘Salem’ season two and if we will see Tituba again?

I think it’s safe to say we will see Tituba in season 2 but we don’t know what her relationship with Mary will be like.

Any chance the fans of ‘Revenge’ will see you again in the Hamptons?

I never say never because Ashley Davenport didn’t die and she’s a tenacious little thing! I have no immediate plans to go back though.

How did ‘Ring My bell’ come about and what’s your goal there?

I love personal style blogs and my husband has a true love of photography. We combined the two and Ring My Bell was born. For me it’s another creative outlet that has nothing to do with acting. Eventually I’d love to expand the Ring My Bell brand into a small capsule collection of chic, directional wardrobe staples.

Is fashion just a hobby for you or you plan to explore the industry more at some point?

My love of fashion is very organic and a true pleasure right now. I would one day hope to explore it more but I’d be careful to keep it as organic and fun as possible. Acting will always be my first love.

What are you fashion advices/favorite trends of summer 2014?

Birkenstocks are back! Go for minimalist black or white or metallic gold or silver.

What was the most memorable experience from the ‘Salem’ set?

Tituba’s familiar is a spider. I am absolutely terrified of spiders so this was a difficult scene for me to shoot! Luckily my body double isn’t such a baby and she helped out. I usually love it when we have animals on set. My favorite is the toad. He’s really quite sweet!

TBT: Juliet Simms

How about a little Throwback Thursday? Here’s me interviewing awesome Juliet Simms at Sony Music’s NYC office back in August 2010, when Juliet was promoting her band Automatic Loveletter‘s debut record. It was long before she got her big solo break at The Voice (and before I learned how to use the hairspray). We had a lovely chat that concluded with us geeking out about who our favorite Buffy characters were (it was Glory for Juliet and Faith for me).

Midweek Delight

Posted on by Mikey Moscow in Blog, Party | Leave a comment

One of my favorite things about travelling to NYC, LA and London was its party-all-week-long attitude which is nowhere to be seen in Moscow. So here I am trying to make a change: tomorrow I’m organizing the first midweek party with some nice summery music, good cocktails and great location. See you at ‘Darling, I’ll Call You Later’ bar at B.Strochenovskiy, 7 at 8pm.
